Providing Support to Children and Youth with Incarcerated Parents

The Supporting Families Affected by Incarceration (SFAI) program supports children and youth with an incarcerated parent, as well as the caregivers and family members who provide care during a parent’s incarceration. The program also works directly with incarcerated parents to help strengthen family relationships and promote positive outcomes for children and families across Hawaii.

Through mentoring, parenting education, and parent-child engagement programs, children, caregivers, and incarcerated parents have opportunities to maintain meaningful connections, build resilience, and strengthen family bonds. The goal of SFAI is to help families navigate the challenges of incarceration while fostering emotional well-being, healthy relationships, and long-term family stability.

Requirements

Mentoring gives children and youth the opportunity to develop another positive relationship with a caring and dedicated adult.

Parenting classes for the incarcerated parent gives them the basic tools of having them realize that they are their keiki’s first teacher.

The incarcerated parent-child sessions support, enhance and maintain the family bonds should all parties agree to attend these sessions.
